"We are holding a one-day symposium reprising the conversations begun at the ArtWorks 2013 conference, Changing the Conversation. There will be presentations from the exciting pilot projects commissioned after the conference, as well as plenty of opportunities for discussion and debate between artists, academics, employers and commissioners." Yesterday I was invited to speak at the Artworks symposium, sharing the outcomes of the development grant I worked on with PRIA Arts. The development grant supported us to create 'PAC: Participatory Arts Connect'. The PAC aims t to be a national network linking practice and training within the participatory arts sector, supporting students from HEI's to connect with 'real time' participatory arts projects across the UK.
Including the PAC, seven projects presented their findings and we also heard from Artworks pathway project leaders. It was great to hear about participatory practice taking place across the UK, and particularly from projects facing similar barriers to the pilot I completed. It seems that to simply offer participatory arts opportunities for students in Higher Educational settings is simply not enough and presents a growth area. More work needs to be done in developing safe and supported ways for students to feel able to take up on opportunities. To be continued! You can now read case studies of these grants. Really excited to be invited to speak at the forthcoming symposium at Tate Britain run by the 'Artworks' initiative. The symposium titled 'Reprising the Conversation' will include presentations from the exciting pilot projects commissioned after the conference, as well as plenty of opportunities for discussion and debate between artists, academics, employers and commissioners. Back in October I was invited to lecture on the BA Creative & Therapeutic Arts course as part of the module 'Working with Diverse Client Groups'. In the session I worked with the students to explore issues of accessibility into art galleries for adults with learning disabilities, as well as practical skills regarding project planning and safeguarding with this particular client group. With thanks to module leader, Melaneia Warwick. Positive You is a training course which is developed and delivered by Leah Jones, a self advocate from charity Halton Speak Out. I have been supporting Leah with the course for the past 3 months and wanted to write a little something about my experiences so far. Leah developed the course after attending training with her PA which she found unaccessible due to its wordy content. Leah decided to rework the course into a series of creative exercises she felt would better benefit and connect to people with a learning disability, many of which are arts based methodologies. Leah, who already works offering peer advocacy, recognised the potential the course could offer in terms of feeding into peoples choice making skills. Together, myself and Leah are gearing up to deliver the course at the end of the month. Will let you know the outcome! Here are some photos from previous Positive You courses. A visit today to AxMe by Ellen Gallagher has really got me excited about collage again! Worth a visit if you can splurge on a ticket. This is a word cloud which I made from a recent research proposal. I think they're a great way to visual key words within a project. Really pleased to announce that myself and project partner Melaneia Warwrick of Pria Arts have been awarded a development grant from 'Artworks' a Paul Hamlyn Foundation initiative. Over the next few months I will be working on a pilot project called PAC: Participatory Arts Connect. This pilot project aims to develop a scaleable model for a national network to link participatory practice and training in the UK. My role will prodominetly be developing and building the website to platform the network, as well as developing partnerships with potential organisations and HEI's. For updates you can view my PHF Artworks profile here, and I shall be updating my blog from time to time. 'Here and Now' an inclusive way of thinking about what a Symposium could be. It features presentations from two practitioners/researchers in the field of inclusive arts discussing recent research projects. I will be discussing the 'You are Artists, I am Curator' research project, and Melaneia Warwick (Director of Pria Arts) shall also be speaking and screening a short film from her latest research project 'Fifteen March Twenty Twelve Thirteen'.
